CATFISH

There are over 190 species of catfish in India, however only seven of these are relatively common that are of interest to anglers.

Habitat: Found all across the Indian sub-continent in both rivers and lakes.

Aggressive predators, they are omnivorous and in certain areas some species are caught mostly on paste baits. However, catfish prefer live or dead baits. Certain fish like the Mully & Silond offer great sport on lures.

The most commonly found species in India are:

  • Goonch (Bagarius yarrelli) – Found in all the major river systems in India.
  • Krishna Mystus (Hemibagrus maydelli) – Found mainly in the Krishna river basin.
  • Silond (Silonia silondia) – Found in all the major river systems in India.
