MAHSEER

The Mahseer is considered by many anglers to be the hardest fighting Fresh water fish in the world.

Habitat: Found across the Indian sub-continent in both rivers and lakes. Predominantly found in fast flowing rivers and streams as Mahseer thrive in highly oxygenated waters.

A very aggressive predator, it is omnivorous and feeds on not only algae, crustaceans, insects, frogs, and other fish but also fruits that fall from overhead trees.

The most commonly found species in India are:

  • Golden Mahseer (Tor Putitora) – Found in the Himalayan rivers in North India.
  • Red Fin Mahseer (Tor Tor) – Found in Central India.
  • Humpback or Orange Fin Mahseer (Tor Ramadevi) – Found in the Cauvery river system, in South India it is considered to be the largest of the Mahseer species.
  • Blue Fin or Deccan Mahseer (Tor Khudree) Found in Central & S. India.
  • Chocolate Mahseer (Neolissochilus hexagonolepis) – Mainly found in N. E. India

Methods: Can be caught on a variety of lures, live & dead bait and various paste baits.

Tackle: Rods, Reels and line depend on the size of fish and method. Spoons, In-line spinners, Crank & Jerk baits, Vibe lures all work well depending on the conditions and fishing pressure in a given area.
